Astragalus whitneyi (Balloon Milkvetch)

Balloon Milkvetch is one for the rock garden circles. It is a very small plant that is found above timberline from Washington to California. A fellow collector provided me with seeds from this species.

Ornamental

The inflated pods are up to 2 inches across and are mottled with a reddish or purplish color - not unlike Christmas decorative bulbs. There are up to a 8 or more pods per stem. A very small plant with tiny silvery green leaves.
