Carex vesicaria (Bladder Sedge, Inflated Sedge)
There are many 'beaked' sedges in the area of this collection (Northwestern US). Note the smooth perigynia (unlike C. sheldonii) in the image to the right. The beak is long and tappered (unlike C. rostrata) and strait (not recurved as in C. flava). All perigynia point upwards (unlike C. retrorsa). The bracts are not awned and the perigynia are relatively large for sedges. Carex vesicaria is a rhizomatous species that grows in moist to wet soils typically in bogs or rather marshy places. It is used in wetland reclamation. Wildlife No information. However, this plant grows in large populations and provides a large seed source. The seeds may serve as a source for some birds and mammals. Ornamental No information. Natural History No information. Propagation No information. Please order seeds in ounce quantities before July.
