All Green Thumbs
Ribes watsonianum (Spiney Gooseberry, Watson's Gooseberry)
This is one of our more unfriendly plants. Even the berries are covered with spines! Rarely will you find such an armored plant. Even the roses withdraw on sight of this warrior. But like the roses it has ornamental value. The spines are thin and about half an inch long, single or in threes. Similar to Ribes lobbii, they are thin, very sharp, and strong (they will pierce leather gloves if you are not careful). The leaves are dark green and up to 3 inches across. The flowers are green and white occasionally with a slight reddish coloring. Ribes watsonianum grows to 4 feet in height. The berries are up to three-fourth inch in diameter. Wildlife I absolutely cannot imagine anything eating these berries! Hummingbirds reportedly feed on all currents and gooseberries. Ornamental This genotype had dark green, shiney leaves well formed. If you have a hole in the fence where the neighbor's dog comes throught, this is the plant you need. But seriously, this is beautiful simply for its dark foliage and leaves.
